Frequently asked questions
- How do I make a crossword puzzle?
- Enter your own words and a clue for each, one per line. The maker lays the words into an interlocking grid where they cross on shared letters, numbers the starting squares, and sorts the clues into Across and Down. You can then solve the puzzle on screen or print it. The more your words share letters, the more tightly they interlock.
- Why can’t some of my words be placed?
- A word can only join the grid if it shares a letter with a word already placed, so it has somewhere to cross. If a word has no letters in common with the others, the maker reports it as unplaced rather than dropping it silently. Adding or swapping a word so it shares a letter usually lets everything fit.
- Can I print the crossword?
- Yes. Once the layout is built you can print it, and the printed sheet includes the numbered grid and the Across and Down clue lists so it can be solved with a pen. You can print a blank copy to hand out, then reveal the answers on screen to check them afterwards.
- Do I have to add clues?
- Adding a clue for each word makes a proper, solvable crossword, but it is not required to build the grid. If you leave the clue off a line, the maker still places the word and simply marks the clue as missing, which is fine if you only want the interlocking layout to fill in yourself.
