Best (tries)

Guess the hidden five-letter word in six tries. Green means right letter, right spot; gold means the letter is in the word but somewhere else.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Type a five-letter word

Enter any valid five-letter word as your first guess, using the on-screen keys or your keyboard, then press Enter.

  2. 2

    Read the colours

Green means that letter is correct and in the right spot. Gold means it is in the word but in a different position. Grey means it is not in the word at all.

  3. 3

    Close in on the answer

Use each clue to shape your next guess, keeping the greens in place and moving the golds. You have six tries to land it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play the word guess game?
You try to find a hidden five-letter word in six guesses. Each guess must be a real five-letter word. After you submit it, the letters change colour to tell you how close you are: green for correct and in place, gold for in the word but misplaced, and grey for not in the word. You use those clues to refine your next guess until you find the answer.
What do the colours mean?
Green means the letter is in the answer and in exactly that position. Gold means the letter is in the answer but in a different spot, so keep it but move it. Grey means the letter is not in the answer at all, so you can rule it out. If a letter appears twice in your guess but once in the answer, only one copy is coloured in.
Is there a new word every day?
There is a fresh word every round, not just once a day, so you never have to wait to play again. Press New word for another puzzle whenever you like. Your best result, measured by how few guesses you needed, is saved on your own device.
Does my score get saved, and does this work offline?
Your best scores are saved in your own browser on this device, so they are still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server. Once the page has loaded it keeps working with no connection.
