Choose words that can cross
A crossword only works if the words interlock, and words interlock on shared letters. So when you pick your list, favour words that have common letters in common positions. Including a few longer words helps, because they offer more crossing points for the shorter words to attach to.
If you start from a theme, a spelling list, a topic or a set of names, scan it for shared letters before you commit. A list where most words contain E, A, R or S will weave together far more tightly than a list of unrelated short words.
Write clues people can solve
Each entry needs a clue. The best clues are clear and point to a single answer, so the solver knows when they are right. For a classroom or a casual puzzle, a short definition is usually enough, while a party crossword can lean on in-jokes and names your guests will recognise.
Keep the clue consistent with the answer. If the answer is plural, the clue should read as plural; if it is a verb, the clue should point to an action. That consistency is what makes a crossword feel fair rather than frustrating.
Generate, check and print
