How to use it

   Start moving

   Press an arrow key, tap the on-screen pad, or swipe on the board. The snake sets off and keeps moving in the last direction you chose.

   Eat to grow

   Guide the head onto the food. Each piece you eat adds a point and a segment, and a new piece appears somewhere else on the board.

   Stay alive

   Avoid the walls and your own body. The longer you grow the tighter the board gets, and the speed creeps up, so plan your turns ahead.

How do you play the Snake game?

Steer the snake around the board and eat the food to grow. The snake moves on its own in the direction you last set, so you only change its heading. You cannot reverse straight back on yourself. The game ends if the head hits a wall or runs into the snake’s own body, so the challenge is fitting a longer and longer snake into the same space.

Does the snake get faster?

Yes. The snake speeds up as your score rises, so the more you eat the less time you have to react to each turn. That climbing speed, together with the longer body, is what makes a high score hard to reach even though the rules are simple.

How do I control it on a phone?

You can swipe in the direction you want to turn, or tap the on-screen direction pad below the board. On a keyboard the arrow keys or WASD both work, and the space bar pauses. The controls are the same game either way.

Does my score get saved, and does this work offline?

Your best scores are saved in your own browser on this device, so they are still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server. Once the page has loaded it keeps working with no connection.
